Mi Voto Cuenta! My Vote Counts 2008 Campaign

JŌB will continue the Voter Registration, Education and Get out the Vote Efforts it began in 2006 for this historic presidential election year.

For the November 2006 elections Justice Overcoming Boundaries (JŌB) partnered withVoter Registration & Education Project (VREP) and The Equality Alliance to implement a voter registration and turnout initiative in South San Diego County called, ¡Mi Voto Cuenta!/ Maibibilang Ang Boto Ko! / My Vote Counts! (My Vote Counts in Spanish, Tagalog, and English, respectively).  Thecampaign focused in the 79th Assembly District which has the least number of registered voters of the County’s eight Assembly Districts.  Latinos, Filipino-Americans, African-Americans and other communities of color comprise 76% of the District’s population. Mi Voto Cuenta registered over 900 new voters, encouraged early absentee voting, and educated people about the importance of civic participation.

JŌB San Diego commited to participate in

Faith & Democracy

GAMALIEL’S FAITH AND DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN

“We are tied together in a single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. And you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be”
— Martin Luther King Jr.

As an affiliate of the Gamaliel Foundation, JŌB leaders are committed to organizing a public meeting in October 2008 and connecting with sister organizations from throughout the country to link and address, local, state and national issues via a lense of shared prosperity and opportunity values.

Gamaliel’s Faith and Democracy Campaign is

  • A SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION. Faith and Democracy is a campaign to challenge our Gamaliel congregations to delve deeply into our faith and our hope for connectedness and to confront what divides us, while connecting to our spiritual roots in order to live out our faith more powerfully in the world.
  • A PRACTICE OF HOPE. Faith and Democracy is a campaign for getting more members of congregations tuned in, connected, trained, and actively involved in the core teams and organizing work of Gamaliel affiliates, including voter engagement through voter registration, education and turnout in order to unleash the energy that comes from practicing hope together in a powerful way.
  • A CHANGE IN NATIONAL PRIORITIES. Faith and Democracy is a campaign for unity and national power: through broad civic engagement and connected and coordinated issue campaigns at local, state, and federal levels. In this presidential election year and 2009 with the new administration and Congress, Gamaliel aims to advance a national platform and to move the country’s priorities from rampant individualism toward community values more reflective of our faith traditions: from isolation toward the common good, from competitive scarcity toward shared abundance, and from a politics of fear toward public policies founded in hope.
